Review:

I just finished up this adorable crossbody bag, and I think it will be perfect for my costume at all upcoming Ren Faire events. I picked up the Acorn Crossbody Bag pattern from Shroomigurumi on Etsy a little while back on a total impulse, and it’s one of the best $7.05 I’ve ever spent. I’m giving it a 4-out-of-5 wand rating.

The bag is shaped like an acorn with a dark brown cap, a light brown body, a little crocheted leaf, and a big wooden button. It measures about 12 inches without the strap, which is the perfect crossbody size. Big enough to actually use, small enough to feel completely whimsical. I will definitely utilize this for Ren Faire accessorizing.

For materials, you’ll need two skeins each of light and dark brown yarn, a bit of green, a tapestry needle, and a big wooden button. It’s working with a 5 mm (H-8) hook. I already had most of this sitting in my stash, which is always a win.

I used Red Heart acrylic yarns for this project. Assuming you’re a seasoned crocheter and already have a tapestry needle, hooks, and buttons, the overall cost for yarn alone is roughly $11.31 (assuming $3.77 for each skein and not including shipping). You will definitely have yarn left over from this project. Overall weight, including a wooden button, came to about 96 grams. The purse was about 8 inches long and 8 inches wide, and with the strap, the bag was about 30 inches long.

The pattern itself is a clean PDF and overall easy to follow. The pattern uses basic, easy-to-understand terminology. I would caution beginners that reverse crochet stitches are used for the bag lid portion. This stitch can be difficult for first-time users and requires a bit of practice.

That said, I do have two edits targeted for beginners. The first is for the starting round for the bag sides. The author doesn’t make it clear that you need to ch-3 in a magic ring and count it as your first stitch. So, you should start with 11 stitches total in the first round, not just 10. It’s a small thing, but it tripped me up, and I figured I’d save you the confusion. The second edit is that the leaf pattern was a little unclear about where to sl st the final stitch for the stem. I winged it and added it to the second st of the previous row.

Shroomigurumi is a Star Seller with nearly 8,400 sales and a near-perfect selling score (4.97) on Etsy, and it shows. Other crafters have called the pattern “super easy to read” and “well-written.” I’d agree, aside from the two little gaps, the instructions are solid and easy to follow. I completed the pattern in roughly 2.5 hours and had no major issues.🌿 Grab the pattern here

If you’re into fantasy, cottagecore, fairycore, forestcore, or just general woodland goblin energy, this pattern is an absolute must. I’ve included my finished product photos below.
