Review:
I had a great experience making Jimothy. This pattern is clearly geared toward intermediate to experienced crocheters and is very well written overall. The instructions were easy to follow, the construction made sense, and all of the pieces came together smoothly. I used generic Red Heart acrylic yarn for my project, and the finished amigurumi ended up being approximately 5.5 inches tall, which is a really nice display size.
One thing I especially appreciated was how quickly the project worked up. I spent about 3 hours crocheting in total, with plenty of breaks mixed in. I'm a fairly slow crocheter, but compared to many other amigurumi patterns in my collection, this one felt relatively fast and efficient to complete. It was satisfying to see it come together without spending days on a small project.
My only real complaint is that the pattern doesn't always indicate how many times to repeat bracketed instructions. The stitch counts are there, so it's possible to figure it out, but it does require stopping to do some math. Personally, I prefer when repeat counts are written out explicitly so I can stay focused on crocheting rather than calculating.
Aside from that minor issue, this was an enjoyable pattern from start to finish. The shaping and assembly were straightforward, the finished amigurumi looks great, and the instructions were clear enough that I rarely had to second-guess what the designer intended.
If you want to replicate the design exactly as I have, you will need a white acrylic paint pen and buttons to sew onto the face. I recommend sealing the paint with a varnish so the paint doesn’t rub off.
If you're comfortable with amigurumi techniques and have a little experience under your belt, I'd definitely recommend giving Jimothy a try. It's a fun, relatively quick project with an adorable finished result.
